Wealthy Texas cattle rancher Bick Benedict (Rock Hudson) and his Virginia-born wife Leslie (Elizabeth Taylor) clash over their differing views on race and land. Jet Rink (James Dean), a lowly ranch-hand, becomes an overnight oil millionaire. Giant explores the dramatic shifts in a Texas family’s fortunes, identity, and relationships against the backdrop of changing social and economic landscapes.
Dean’s portrayal of the conflicted ranch-hand earned him a posthumous Academy Award nomination.
‘Giant in size, giant in ambition, giant in the human emotions that are generated by the massive forces of nature and human development that make up the peculiarly American sub-nation, Texas, this picture readily takes its place with the handful of screen epics.’ – The Hollywood Reporter
