National Archives of Australia is celebrating the arrival of our exhibition Camel trains to steel wheels: life on the Trans-Australian Railway in Canberra with a fun-filled community day – and you’re invited!

Come along for the ride and explore the fascinating history of the Trans-Australian Railway.

Enjoy live music, delicious food, miniature train rides, guided tours, and fun activities for everyone as we celebrate the exhibition’s opening.

Pack a picnic rug, soak in the vibrant atmosphere, and take part in this free, all ages event.

Whether you’re stopping by for a quick look or planning to spend the whole day, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Entry is free, and no bookings are required. We can’t wait to see you there!

10 am – Official launch including speeches and Welcome to Country
10:30 am and 12:30 pm – Voices / Dhuniai gallery tour
10:45 am and 12:45 pm – Connections / Mura gadi gallery tour
11 am and 1 pm – Camel trains exhibition curator floor talks
11:30 am and 1:30 pm – Railway story time
10 am to 2 pm – Activities, food and miniature train rides.
