Based on General Lew Wallace’s wildly popular 1880 novel, this was one of the most lavish and expensive productions of the silent era. It’s the story of a Jewish prince who refuses to betray his people to the Romans. Featuring an epic sea battle, a stunning chariot race and early experimental Technicolour sequences, the movie was the inspiration behind the 1959 Charlton Heston classic.
‘Ben-Hur is a picture that rises above spectacle, even though it is spectacle. On the screen it isn’t the chariot race or the great battle scenes between the fleet of Rome and the pirate galleys of Golthar. It is the tremendous heart throbs that one experiences leading to those scenes that make them great.’ – Variety
