Charting the 20-year love story of Australian artist Craig Ruddy and his partner, Roberto Meza Mont, filmmaker and close friend Molly Reynolds stitches together intimate personal footage shot by Roberto in this filmic tribute.

Ruddy, who won the Archibald Prize in 2004 for his charcoal portrait of David Gulpilil, died in 2022 from Covid complications, aged 53.

The film captures his work process, his life in the Northern Rivers, and his travels around the world.

“Vibrant and attractive, they’re both undeniably photogenic and appealing documentary subjects. But added to that is the foreknowledge of how this will end.” – ArtsHub

“It is the potent combination of small, real moments that build to make A Portrait of Love a slow-burning heartbreaker.” – The Queer Review

Join the NFSA for a post-screening Q&A with director Molly Reynolds.
