East of Eden | Screening at the NFSA
- This event has passed.
PG | 110 Mins | 1955 | DCP | US | D: Elia Kazan
The movie that made James Dean a star, East of Eden is set during the First World War in California’s harsh and beautiful Salinas Valley. The film is inspired by the biblical story of Cain and Abel, sons of Adam and Eve, who offer gifts to God – but when favour falls on one, a shadow of jealousy leads the other down a dark and irreversible path. Cal (James Dean) and Aron (Richard Davalos) fall in love with the same girl whilst competing for the affections of their father (Raymond Massey).
‘There are superb performances, most notably from young rebel Dean and Massey, and a wondrous sense of time and place that make this movie a classic of its time.’ – Empire
