SUMMARY:Exhibition: Remembering the War
DESCRIPTION:The Second World War represents the greatest loss of life in an armed conflict that the world has ever seen. On the 80th anniversary of the war ending\, explore stories of the conflict from the National Library’s collections.\nRepresentatives of Britain\, Russia\, France and the United States accepted the unconditional surrender of the German Armed Forces on 8 May 1945\, ending the war in Europe. The war in the Pacific did not formally end until nearly four months later\, when the Japanese instrument of surrender was signed on 2 September. \nFrom recruitment posters urging Australians to enlist and opposition to conscription by conscientious objectors\, to espionage and the evolving role of women’s work in the war effort\, this exhibition highlights stories from our collections relating to the Second World War. Other items reveal the postwar reconstruction of nations whose citizens’ lives had been irrevocably changed by the conflict. \nContent warning: Please be advised that this display contains objects and records\, but not images\, related to the Mauthausen–Gusen and Auschwitz concentration camps which some visitors may find distressing. \nThe exhibition runs from 26 August 2025 to 3 May 2026 and is exclusive to Canberra.

SUMMARY:Julius Caesar
DESCRIPTION:LET’S CARVE HIM AS A DISH FIT FOR THE GODS\n— Brutus\, Act 2\, Scene 1 \nBy William Shakespeare\nDirector Peter Evans\nSet Design by Peter Evans\nLighting Designer Amelia Lever-Davidson\nWith Leon Ford and Brigid Zengeni \nIt’s been more than 450 years since a monarch ruled in Rome. But now\, in the senate and the streets\, the forum and the marketplace\, the word ‘king’ is being whispered again. Julius Caesar has triumphed in battle\, and the adoring crowd roars its approval. The crown is offered to him once\, twice\, three times. And each time\, his refusal seems a little more reluctant. \nFearful of Caesar’s growing power\, Brutus and Cassius hatch a chilling conspiracy. A pre-emptive strike. But their brutal act unleashes a cascade of violence they can’t control. Is this the end of the republic? \nDon’t miss Peter Evans’ thrilling new production of Shakespeare’s political masterpiece.

SUMMARY:DEAN EDGECOMBE AND THE SEVENTH SONS hosts the CBS APRIL Pro Blues Jam
DESCRIPTION:Dean Edgecombe and the Seventh Sons first got together way back in 2000 to realise a shared desire to present the early electric Blues sounds of Chicago\, Texas\, Memphis and Kansas City to modern audiences. In the past\, the band has mostly kept it pretty casual\, gigging in the blues friendly rooms around Canberra with a fairly fluid line up of players. \nThe band line up has now stabilised with Dean Edgecombe on bass and vocals\, Rob West on drums and vocals\, Artem Grigoriev on guitar and James Hoogstad on tenor sax and harmonica. Over the past three years the Seventh Sons have gigged solidly around Canberra and southern New South Wales. In 2025 they released their second album “The Midnight End of Town”\, which received positive reviews and radio airplay on Community Blues programs around Australia. \nThe Seventh Sons set is a great mix of classic and original R&B\, Blues and Roots music with the odd curve ball thrown in for good measure. Their songs are presented with respect\, excellent musicianship and a sense of fun. The Seventh Sons will take you everywhere the Blues has been and then some. \nThe host band will be followed by some of the finest musicians in the Canberra region and surrounds\, jamming together for a fabulous afternoon of live blues music. \nAnd\, as always; bring your friends\, your instrument\, your voice or just your dancing shoes!! \nCBS members: $10 / General: $15 / kids under 16: Free Entry
