SUMMARY:Exhibition: Remembering the War
DESCRIPTION:The Second World War represents the greatest loss of life in an armed conflict that the world has ever seen. On the 80th anniversary of the war ending\, explore stories of the conflict from the National Library’s collections.\nRepresentatives of Britain\, Russia\, France and the United States accepted the unconditional surrender of the German Armed Forces on 8 May 1945\, ending the war in Europe. The war in the Pacific did not formally end until nearly four months later\, when the Japanese instrument of surrender was signed on 2 September. \nFrom recruitment posters urging Australians to enlist and opposition to conscription by conscientious objectors\, to espionage and the evolving role of women’s work in the war effort\, this exhibition highlights stories from our collections relating to the Second World War. Other items reveal the postwar reconstruction of nations whose citizens’ lives had been irrevocably changed by the conflict. \nContent warning: Please be advised that this display contains objects and records\, but not images\, related to the Mauthausen–Gusen and Auschwitz concentration camps which some visitors may find distressing. \nThe exhibition runs from 26 August 2025 to 3 May 2026 and is exclusive to Canberra.

SUMMARY:Exhibition - Nanuma: Karlina Mitchell
DESCRIPTION:Nanuma means to think and remember – together. This body of work draws on that principle to reimagine the colonial photograph as a site of reflection\, resistance\, and renewal. Rather than accepting these images as fixed historical records\, the works disrupt their authority and returns focus to the sitter – their presence and dignity. Through processes of reworking\, reframing\, and recontextualising archival imagery\, the project invites viewers to confront the layered histories embedded within the frame. Nanuma proposes a collective act of remembering that is active rather than passive\, opening space for dialogue and reinterpretation. By centring the perspectives of iTaukei people\, this body of work transforms the colonial gaze into a platform for self-representation and cultural continuity. In doing so\, it honours those depicted not as subjects of documentation\, but as individuals whose stories\, strength\, and identities endure beyond the photograph.

SUMMARY:Extra Padding
DESCRIPTION:‘Extra Padding’ is the third iteration of an ongoing project exploring quilting and textile art. Here\, the threads of the quietly contemplative\, the technically attentive\, and the mysterious weave together with the radical\, the interpersonal\, and the exploratory. \nQuilting may call to mind comfort\, cosiness\, and swaddled safety\, but for generations it has also been a vehicle for political resistance\, radical organising\, and community building. Rowdy humour and joyful collaboration are embedded in these works\, sitting alongside thread and fabric as essential materials in their own right\, bringing human emotion and physicality to the fore. \nThe predominant use of second-hand textiles marks these pieces as endpoints in an unfathomably complex system of manufacturing and labour. Yet through them\, artists can metaphorically repair and refashion their world. The works invite audiences to appreciate a myriad of techniques and subjects\, coming together to form a grotto of textural encounters and thoughtful expression.\nIn this exhibition\, quilting becomes a kind of armour: forged from community ties\, the comfort of shared joy\, and the enrichment of creative work. \nImage: Olivia Arnold\, ‘Soft Window\,’ 2024\, linen\, cotton\, thread\, cotton wadding\, bias binding\, 102 x 82cm.

SUMMARY:PONTE Dancing on a Knife's Edge Documentary + Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Dancer Floeur Alder\, daughter of ballet luminaries Lucette Aldous and Alan Alder survives a brutal attack. While physical wounds heal\, trauma stirs turbulent past memories\, sparking a deeply personal quest to find her place in the dance world. \nCritics describe the 2025 documentary as a “poetic and unflinching portrait” of dancer Floeur Alder’s resilience Dance Australia labeled it a “landmark moment” with “striking visual beauty\,” while FilmInk praised its depiction of dance as “both vulnerability and armour”. \nQ&A following the screening with Floeur Alder moderated by Ausdance ACT Executive Director Dr. Cathy Adamek joined by a panel of experts from the ACT. The session will both provide insight into the film as well as explore the power of dance and healing. \nA documentary by Dawn Jackson\, presented by Ausdance ACT for Australian Dance Week in collaboration with the National Film and Sound Archive.

SUMMARY:Experimental Photograms Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This unique workshop offers participants the opportunity to create experimental photograms in the photo access darkroom. Artist Simone Darcy\, known for her distinctive approach to camera-less image-making and experimental darkroom processes\, will guide you through the steps of creating your own finished prints to take home. \nWorking with the body\, found materials\, and chemical painting techniques\, participants will explore how abstract forms\, textures\, and layered motifs emerge directly on photographic paper. Through hands-on experimentation\, the workshop reveals how light\, chemistry\, and physical gesture can combine to produce unpredictable results. \nDrawing on Simone’s fascination with art\, science\, and photographic history\, the workshop introduces alternative processes that respond to both the physical and psychological body. \nPlaces are limited\, and all materials are provided. You’re welcome to bring a piece of clothing to use; transparent and patterned fabrics are preferable. \nSome prior darkroom knowledge is preferable.
