SUMMARY:'Distant blues\, from a little closer' by Olivia Gates
DESCRIPTION:‘Lost really has two disparate meanings. Losing things is about the familiar falling away\, getting lost is about the unfamiliar appearing… Or you get lost\, in which case the world has become larger than your knowledge of it.’\n– Rebecca Solnit\, A Field Guide to Getting Lost (2006) \nDistant blues\, from a little closer is Gates’ first solo exhibition. The works navigate experiences of losing\, loss and being lost\, while tracing moments of great love and joy that weave through them. \nThe exhibition brings together works developed during her residency at M16 Art Space this year\, alongside a return to textiles after a decade-long focus on glass. Rather than seeking resolution\, the works wander without the need for certainty. The materials hold grounding memories and hope for a once imagined life. They linger with things that feel distant. A quiet pull between leaving something unknown or letting it become familiar. \nImage: Olivia Gates\, ‘elation’\, 2025\, cyanotype on paper\, 90 x 60cm. Photo courtesy of the artist.

SUMMARY:Dogs in Space + Q&A
DESCRIPTION:A gritty punk drama of life in a Melbourne share house full of musicians and youthful excess. \nCelebrate the 40th anniversary of this iconic Australian work with a post-screening Q&A with director Richard Lowenstein. \n1986 | MA 15+ | 103 mins | D: Richard Lowenstein \nSet in Melbourne’s underground music scene in the late 1970s\, Dogs in Space follows a loose collective of young artists\, musicians and drifters drawn together by the fragile bonds of creativity and excess. At its centre is Sam (Michael Hutchence)\, a magnetic outsider whose idealism and recklessness ripple through the group. \nDirector Richard Lowenstein captures a raw\, affectionate portrait of subculture in flux\, anchored by Michael Hutchence’s magnetic performance. Lived‑in and elegiac\, the film is a defining snapshot of Australian counterculture. \n‘A pungent snapshot of a time and place.’ — Peter Bradshaw\, The Guardian \nDogs in Space is held in the NFSA collection.
