DESCRIPTION:‘Rematriate’ is a feminist\, Indigenous reimagining of the word “repatriate\,” intentionally disrupting colonial language to recentre matriarchal knowledge\, care\, and cultural continuity. Through large scale woven banners and textile installations\, Jessika Spencer expands her weaving practice into immersive acts of cultural resistance and renewal. \nWorking with secondhand textiles\, raffia and naturally dyed materials\, Spencer draws on weaving as both ancestral practice and contemporary craft activism. It presents settings of seven segments of Kahlil Gibran’s poetical philosophy for voices and instrumental ensemble. \nThe Wayfarers choir’s Canberra chapter is an eclectic group of about 40 singers from age seven upwards from all over NSW and ACT. They will be joined for this performance by a lovely instrumental ensemble of professional and near-professional players of strings\, wind and percussion. \nAll proceeds from this event will be donated to Love Works Africa\, an Australian-registered charity. Love Works Africa partners with local communities and trusted leaders to care for vulnerable children and families in rural Zambia. Zambian handicrafts will be on sale\, and the director of Love Works Africa will present a talk on their work during the interval.
