FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS NO LIGHTS NO LYCRA?
NLNL was started in Melbourne in 2009 and now runs around Australia and the world. We hire a space and make it dark. It’s about just making dancing fun! Dance how you like at your own pace. There’s no distractions, no phones, no talking on the dancefloor. It’s a No Alcohol/ No Drug dance session. Some people use it as a chance to have a fun exercise session, some people love it as a bit of time to themselves with no kids, responsibilities etc, some people use it as a way to help improve their well-being, and some people just like coming along for something to do midweek. People attend for a variety of reasons. Why not try it for yourself.

HOW DARK IS IT?
When you first walk in, it might seem quite dark, but after a few minutes you can see the silhouettes of other people. Give your eyes time to adjust.

WHO GOES TO THIS THING?
It’s an inclusive atmosphere. There's generally a good mix of ages, genders, bodies, abilities, backgrounds- from teens to seniors and everything in between!

I’M NOT SURE ABOUT COMING ON MY OWN… DO MANY PEOPLE DO THIS?
Yep. People do attend on their own. It’s no big deal at NLNL to come alone, in fact it’s encouraged!

WHAT MUSIC DO YOU PLAY?
Songs currently in the music charts as well as songs from all other decades. There’s a wide variety of music. We play the well-known classics that make you want to dance and also some stuff that you may not have heard before that might become your new favourite.
