They Shall Not Grow Old

When 11 Nov, 2018 10:45am — 12:00pm Where National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA), Acton Website http://www.nfsa.gov.au/events/they-shall-not-grow-old
Dir: Peter Jackson, New Zealand, 2018, 99mins
To mark the centenary of the end of the First World War, Academy Award-winning director Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) was given unprecedented access to the Imperial War Museums’ extensive archive, much of it previously unseen. Spending months in the archive, Jackson combined footage with audio interviews of servicemen who fought in the conflict, crafting an extraordinary new film telling the story of life on the front line.

Join us on Armistice Day for one of the first screenings in Australia, fresh off its world premiere at the London Film Festival.

'Peter Jackson has created a visually staggering thought experiment; an immersive deep-dive into what it was like for ordinary British soldiers on the western front. This he has done using state-of-the-art digital technology to restore flickery old black-and-white archive footage of the servicemen’s life in training and in the trenches. He has colourised it, sharpened it, put it in 3D and, as well as using diaries and letters for narrative voice-over, he has used lip-readers to help dub in what the men are actually saying. The effect is electrifying' - The Guardian
