For the Fallen

When 11 Nov, 2018 4:00pm — 6:00pm Where Orana Steiner School, Weston Website
The ANU Choral Society (SCUNA) invites all to commemorate the Centenary of Armistice in For the Fallen, a moving performance of Johannes Brahm’s Ein Deutches Requiem.

Taking place on the 11th of November at 4pm in the Overture Hall of the Orana Steiner School, this concert is about lamenting the reality of war and commemorating all of those who have lost their lives in times of war. The concert will be conducted by local maestro Leonard Weiss and featuring local soloists Rachael Duncan, Colin Milner and Dr Anthony Smith, as well as an orchestra of talented local musicians.

The choice of Brahms’ Requiem was a deliberate one for this particularly solemn occasion. What better than a Requiem to properly and appropriately honour those who have died. The choice to use Brahms’ Requiem is that unlike many other requiems that were written for famous soldiers, battles or other such notable people or events, Brahms wrote this particular Requiem as a way to grieve for the death of his parents. It shies away from the more liturgical texts of the standard Requiem format with passages taken from the Lutheran Bible, which focus less on the sadness of those who have departed, but on those who are left behind that must find joy after the sadness passes.

For all of these reasons and many more, Brahms’ Requiem is the perfect piece to commemorate all those lives lost in war. On the 11th day of the 11th month we will remember not just those soldiers who died in wars, but also the civilians and those who could not fight for themselves. All lives lost in war are devastating, and this performance is a reminder than in many ways there are no winners in wartime; only those who survive it, and those who must mourn.

Tickets for the performance are available online at: Tickets will also be available at the door.

The ANU Choral Society is one of Canberra’s oldest non-auditioned choirs, based for over 50 years at the Australian National University. If you are interested in joining SCUNA for 2019, please email
