World Nordic Walking Day in Canberra

When 19 May, 2018 9:00am — 12:00pm Where Embassy of Finland, Darwin Avenue, Yarralumla Australian pääkaupunkiterritorio, Australia
The Embassy of Finland will be proudly celebrating World Nordic Walking Day with Canberra’s very own Capital Nordic Walking and partner the Heart Foundation with an all-inclusive event at our embassy in Yarralumla.

Come and make history at Australia’s first-ever Nordic Walking Race – it’s free! Join Canberra’s growing community of Nordic Walkers and learn why they have taken up one of the world’s fastest growing, super-effective and easy-to-learn health activities – that is suitable for all ages, fitness levels and exercise goals.

All welcome! Those without poles - curious to find out what all the fuss about Nordic Walking is, along with Canberra's growing community of Nordic Walkers - strutting their stuff - demonstrating Nordic Walking in the 7km Invitation Challenge and the leisurely Social Nordic Walk and Talk stroll along the lake front - which non-pole users are most welcome to join in. There will be plenty to see and do and loads of prizes, including a 7km Nordic Walking Invitation Challenge along the lake front – starting and finishing at the Embassy. It will be a fun-filled morning – in the spirit of the Finnish Crazy Games. Most of all, you can donate now or on the day to our partner the Heart Foundation in support of their mission to reduce suffering and death from heart, stroke and blood vessel disease in Australia.

You can learn more about Finland and Nordic Walking, with Finnish food and drinks also available for purchase. While the Nordic Walking Racers are out you could walk along with the social Nordic ‘Walk and Talk’ group along the edge of the lake or join in a “Come and feel the Nordic Walking muscles” session – with Kristen Pratt of Capital Nordic Walking who will give a demonstration of Nordic Walking and why it’s so effective.

The keen and curious could also take up the opportunity to experience for yourself and actually feel how Nordic Walking actively uses over 90% of your muscles – way more than regular walking, running and cycling.

The secret to Nordic Walking being way more effective than regular walking, running and cycling is in the specially designed poles (different to hiking poles) and correct technique which enables you to harness the power of your upper body – back, shoulders, arms and core – to propel yourself along – literally “walking on all fours”!

Nordic Walking is low-impact and also significantly reduces the load and strain on ankle, knee, and hip joints, strengthens core, improves posture, and can ease back and neck pain. Add on the mood lifting benefits of exercising outdoors in Canberra’s beautiful green spaces and the social aspect of Nordic Walking with family and friends and you can easily understand why it has taken off around the world.

The Embassy of Finland is a truly fitting a location, with the activity owing its lineage to summer training methods adopted by Finnish cross-country skiers in 1930's. Even so, it was not until the 1990's did contemporary Nordic Walking develop into a fitness activity in its own right, when a group of Finnish companies worked together to produce poles, which included ergonomic straps for a more relaxed hold and angled rubber paws for walking on different terrains. Today Finland is the epicentre of Nordic Walking with over half a million participants enjoying Nordic Walking in ‘the land of thousands of lakes’.
